Word Counter

Count words, characters, sentences, and reading time — live, as you type.

100% freeRuns in your browserNo signup, no watermark

Paste or type any text and see a live count of words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading and speaking time. Nothing is sent to a server — the count updates instantly in your browser as you type.

Writers use it to hit essay and article limits, students check assignment lengths, and marketers verify meta descriptions, tweets, and ad copy against character limits. The keyword density panel shows your most-used words so you can spot repetition before your readers do.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The counter runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never transmitted, stored, or logged — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it keeps working.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses the widely accepted average of 225 words per minute for silent reading. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, the typical pace for presentations and voiceovers.

Does it count characters with and without spaces?

Yes. Both counts are shown side by side, because some limits (like meta descriptions) count spaces while some style guides quote counts without them.

Is there a maximum text length?

No hard limit. Because everything runs locally, the tool comfortably handles book-length manuscripts — hundreds of thousands of words — without slowing down.

Can I use it for X (Twitter) posts and meta descriptions?

Yes — the limits panel shows exactly how many characters you have left for an X post (280), an Instagram caption (2,200), and a Google meta description (155–160).
